Methods of sterilisation

There are a number of methods of sterilisation to make sure your baby bottles are safe to use. Here is a guide courtesy of Tommee Tippee to help you find the right one.

Before you start

Before sterilising, it is important to clean all your baby bottles thoroughly. This is best achieved with warm soapy water and a bottle brush or by placing them on the top rack of a dishwasher, on a warm cycle, avoiding strong coloured foods. Be sure to clean all bottle components, including teats and lids, ensuring all traces of milk are removed. For best results, this process is best completed as soon after a feed as possible to avoid giving the milk chance to dry.

Once cleaning is completed, rinse off all detergent carefully. You should also wipe down worktops and surfaces and clean your hands thoroughly before proceeding to the sterilisation phase.

Note: Tommee Tippee baby bottles are dishwasher safe, but other baby bottles may not be. Check with the manufacturer or wash by hand.

Sterilisation methods

"Proper sterilization of baby bottles is crucial to ensure your baby's health and safety. Here's a summarized guide based on the methods you mentioned:

Steps to Sterilize Baby Bottles: Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the bottles, teats, and all components using warm, soapy water or a dishwasher. Remove all milk residues and avoid strong-coloured foods. Clean soon after feeding to prevent milk from drying.

Rinsing: Carefully rinse off all detergent from the bottles and other equipment. Wipe down surfaces and wash your hands before starting the sterilization process.

Sterilization Methods:

a. Boiling: Boil bottle feeding equipment in water for 10 minutes, ensuring all items are submerged. Use the sterilized bottles as soon as possible to prevent contamination. However, boiling may damage teats more quickly.

b. Cold Water Sterilizing: Use a non-toxic cold-water solution in a specially designed unit or a plastic container with a lid. Baby equipment can be used directly from the solution or rinsed with cooled boiled water.

c. Steam Sterilizing: Use a microwave or electric sterilizer following the manufacturer's guidelines carefully. This method is quick, easy, and can keep the items sterile for up to 24 hours if the lid remains closed.

Some Considerations: Boiling: Quick but might damage teats. Cold Water Sterilizing: Non-toxic and offers ease of use. Steam Sterilizing: Fast and efficient, ensuring sterility for a prolonged period. Choose a method that suits your convenience and ensures effective sterilization while considering the pros and cons of each method."
