While gestational diabetes normally goes away after the baby is born, you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future. We’re sharing our top tips to stay healthy and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes.
Have a repeat oral glucose tolerance test 6-12 weeks after your baby is born to check if your glucose levels have returned to normal.
Have a blood test every couple of years. This will help detect type 2 diabetes early. Type 2 diabetes can have no symptoms so a regular blood test can help you stay in good health.
Maintain a healthy weight. If you find this hard talk to your GP, a dietitian and exercise physiologists for tailored advice.
Try and fit 30 minutes of easy enjoyable activity into each day. If you don’t have 30 minutes, try and move for at least 10 minutes. It all makes a difference.
Plan your meals and snacks before you go shopping so you’ll have everything you need to make a healthy choice at home.
