How to ease pain during pregnancy

The joy of childbirth can be tempered by the onset of mild to severe pain during pregnancy such as, post-partum pelvic pain, an unwanted side effect that many new mothers will want gone as soon as possible.

Fortunately, it can be treated in many ways including stabilising the pelvis as well as allowing the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles to work in sync. Both ways can be facilitated via regular and proper use of the right pregnancy products particularly SRC products.

Post-pregnancy or pregnancy-related pelvic pain results in instability, limitation of movement and function, and mild to severe pain in the pelvic joints.

Sometimes, the specific causes of pelvic pain may not be obvious in most women but there is usually a combination of causes at work. These include the:

  • Release of the relaxin hormone, which allows greater flexibility in the birth canal in preparation for the baby’s birth
  • Instability of the pelvic joints
  • Changes in the centre of gravity
  • Changes in posture

Locations of pain in the pelvic region

Pregnancy-related pelvic pain can be felt in various areas of the pelvic region. The pain can cause women to either shuffle or waddle with many being aware of audible clicking sounds from the pelvis during their everyday movements, such as walking, turning over in bed, and climbing the stairs. The pain can also be accompanied by the affected area being tender to the touch.

The areas affected by pregnancy-related pelvic pain are:

  • Pain in the pelvis or hip area known as pelvic girdle pain (PGP)
  • Pain in the back of the body specifically in the area where the sacrum and iliac crest meet is known as sacroiliac joint pain or (SIJ) pain
  • Pain in the front of the pelvis is known as symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), a result of stress on the pubis symphysis joint

In all instances, the proper and regular use of SRC products particularly the compression shorts can significantly lessen the pain during pregnancy in terms of duration, frequency and intensity. The compression shorts can also be used to alleviate pain radiating down the leg, which causes difficulty when walking and performing gentle exercises for recovery purposes.
