7 Steps to amazing pregnancy photos

By Channon Williamson, Channon Williamson Photography

Pregnancy is one of the most exciting and scary times of your life all at the same time. With your hormones going crazy, sometimes nausea can be debilitating in the first few months and fear of the unknown if this is your first. But also you have the excitement and anticipation, because it is a magical time of new life and wonder. It’s a time worth capturing because once the baby arrives you very soon forget. So, the answer is: Capture and remember this amazing time with stunning pregnancy photos.

Here are some tips to help you plan an amazing maternity photography session.

1. Choose the right time

Once you have a nice belly showing is great, and is usually around the 34 week mark. After this you may begin to feel really uncomfortable, and of course there is always the possibility of bub making an early entrance. And it gives you a little time to reschedule if the weather is bad on the day of your shoot.

2. Wear something that makes you feel beautiful – because you are!

Maybe a flowy gown is your thing or maybe your hubby’s oversized white shirt makes you feel great – wear that! or a gorgeous Boho dress may be your jam – wear that! or you may be totally comfortable in your own skin – which takes us to point no 3

3. Show some Skin

This really is the time when you should be loving yourself, you are growing a new human, which is a huge deal, so go on show some skin. You can add sexy underwear, or simply have a dress that shows the bump. Or if you are totally cool, rock that body and do a semi nude.

4. Get Outdoors

We are blessed with the most glorious weather in Perth, so head outdoors and rock that sunset. Even thunder clouds can make for a dramatic backdrop.

5. Get Creative

Now is the time to really think outside the box – you can get really creative and arty with your maternity session. Maybe an awesome editorial styled shoot or something fun in the city using dramatic light. The possibilities are endless.

6. Include your significant other and your younger kids

The more the merrier, this is about celebrating your growing family, your connection to one another and your deep love. You will look back in 10 years time and cherish these moments.

7. Hire a professional photographer

A good photographer can advise you about selecting the perfect location and time for your photoshoot and often will have gowns and dresses in the studio for you to use. She will discuss the style and mood of the photos you are wanting, so you end up with beautiful memories to treasure for a lifetime.
