Midwives Australia

Midwives Australia logo

The term midwife is derived from Middle English: mid = “with” and Old English: wif = “woman”.

Midwifery is a health care profession in which providers offer care to childbearing women during their pregnancy, labour and birth, and during the postpartum period. They also care for the newborn through to six weeks of age, including assisting with breastfeeding.

A practitioner of midwifery is known as a midwife, a term used in reference to both women and men, although the majority of midwives are female.

Midwives Australia believes in educating Mothers and mothers-to-be so that they make informed choices about all aspects of their natal care. A midwife will recommend lots of books, DVD’s and websites to you. A midwife will also be available to support you and your family through pregnancy, birth and the post birth transition.
