Not just the baby blues
Presented by Wondermums
WONDERMUMS presents a session on recognising the differences between normal emotional challenges commonly experienced during the postnatal period vs changes in mental health that may indicate the need for further assessment and intervention.
This Bupa Parenting Insights talk is given by Kirsty Ross from WONDERMUMS. Kristy is a Clinical Psychologist with over 10 years’ experience in private practice managing clients’ perinatal mental health issues.
The postnatal period is a crucial time for mums. It is a time of significant adjustment where reality meets a mum’s expectations head-on. It’s a time when mums are in a state of vulnerability, experiencing overwhelming emotions, physical demands, sleep-deprivation, disruptions to normal routine, along with adapting to changes to their bodies and their relationships. Any one of these challenges can disturb their sense of self. However, when combined, as they very frequently are following a birth, things can quickly overwhelm mums and leave them feeling powerless and unable to cope.
It is normal for mums to experience emotional discomfort during this time as they transition through motherhood and encounter new challenges. However, it is also common for mums to experience more frequent and intense symptoms that would benefit from additional support.
